Description

It really does not get much better than this: arguably the best generation of all air-cooled 911's, manual, and in triple black. I am very familiar with this generation 911 as I had one as my daily driver for about 6 years, 25 years ago. These are the last of the truly hand-built Porsche's and an analog race car for the road. Both sophisticated and raucous, the 964 is a modern legend. It is the last of the air-cooled 911's with the iconic front fenders, yet its McPherson suspension, ABS, AC, ventilation and airbag systems made this a major leap forward from the outgoing 3.2 liter Carrera model. The 964's air-cooled boxer engine displaces 3.6 liters with a twin spark ignition system. This 911 Carrera 2 Cabriolet is a low mileage example that has been preserved in excellent condition. The black paint is in beautiful condition. The original top is minty. The interior is in very nice shape with appropriate wear to the seats, a blemish-free dash, great carpets, gauges, and steering wheel. All glass is in wonderful shape. Bearing out the low mileage are perfect body panel rubbers, which are all still pliable and soft. When we purchased the car, it had been freshly serviced by Lindbergh Motorsport's owner, Klaus Selbert--celebrated Porsche expert and racer. During that service, all fluids and filters were changed, valve lash set, rotors replaced, and valve cover gaskets renewed. The A/C was converted to R134 using factory parts. As with virtually every Porsche 911 iteration, the 964 had its design flaws, the old joke being that Porsche's R&D department is the customer. 964's typically have three areas of concern: rust formation at the base of the windshield where water can collect in the windshield channel and settles under the window seal, the body colored surround of the automatically activated rear wing can crack in the upper left or right corners, and last, the 964's 3.6 liter boxer engine is notorious for oil leaks. Often this manifests itself in the form of weeping between the engine case and the heads, as well as leaks from the case studs, valve cover gaskets, and oil return tubes. Many suspect that the lower engine shield, which the factory fitted to lower air resistance and noise output to meet regulations, creates a heat trap that can cause premature wear to the gaskets that are present in these engines. And, while oil weeping and the "dime of oil" on the floor between weekend drives poses no existential threat to these robust boxer engines, the fumes of the oil burning on the heat exchangers is unpleasant and to our mind not acceptable in a top-quality 964. Additionally, the air turbulence at speed causes those oil fumes to deposit on the rear of the vehicle. The solution to this problem is simple, albeit pricey, which is why many 964's are left to leak for years on end. We wanted our 964 to be great and chose respected ET Tuning in Union, MO to reseal the engine. With the engine out of the car and well-dismantled, we opted to refresh the valve springs, machine the heads, and to install a new set of rings, given that those are all wear items. All oil return tubes and hoses were also replaced at this time. The result is a 964 engine that is fully dialed in, is dry and ready for the next 30 years of enjoyment. The car has also been treated to a professional detailing with ceramic coating. The car is in wonderful shape and presents more like a three-year old car than a thirty-year old one. Clean CarFax and believed to be a 5 owner car, the last 3 all in Missouri and members of the local Porsche Club. Checks out via PCNA, fully galvanized unibody, 10 year anti-corrosion warranty, never smoked in. Optioned with 158 Blaupunkt Reno, 286 Intense Wind Screen Washer, 288 Headlamp Washers, 454 Cruise Control, and 494 Amplifier. Equiped with the desirable belt-line leather interior. Fully electric convertible top works as designed. Wheels fitted are Porsche 18" with MIchelin Pilot Sports. Price: $72,500
